CSA / NOYC Fall Wed PM Series
Can you believe we are at the end of another sailing season? Come on out for some great sailing. Winds will be strong, the burger hot, beer cold and the company... well...it is what it is.

A special thanks to Seabrook Marine for being
the primary sponsor of this series.

Great Lake Race
It's time to start thinking about the Great Lake Race.

We are seeing more and more boats on the lake. Wed PM races have been getting 50+ boats each week. Last year the Great Lake Race was the largest PHRF regatta on the lake with 48 boats. There is no reason we can not get 60 boats for GLR. So let's start talking it up. Encourage people who normally do not race to come and join us. The steeple-chase format is always a navigational challenge.

The party will be at NOYC again. There will be lots of food, drink and music. The skippers meeting will be at NOYC on Friday @ 8P

Date: Sat, September 27

Round The Lake race
This is one of the most fun and frustrating race you will ever do. You do not have to worry about a long deliver to the starting area. You will start and finish from the same spot. You can start from the northshore or the southshore. You can choose to go around the course clockwise or counter-clockwise. The choice is yours. Will the boats who start clockwise beat the boats sailing counter-clockwise? Or will it be the other way around?

These are the rules. You start either at the "A" mark on the southshore, "M1" mark in Mandeville, or 3 wells in Slidell. When the plane of your bow crosses the plane of the mark, you have started. GPS time is the official time. Record your own finish. You must round "A". "M1" and "3 Wells"

In Memory Of Nat Belloni

Nathaniel Belloni, N.O. sportswriter
Tuesday, February 05, 2008
By John Pope

Nathaniel F. "Nat" Belloni Jr., an award-winning writer who covered such pursuits as prizefighting, sailing and golf as a sportswriter for The States-Item, died Friday of cancer at his Metairie home. He was 68.

A lifelong New Orleanian who graduated from St. Aloysius High School and Loyola University, Mr. Belloni wrote for New Orleans' afternoon paper from 1958 to 1975. He won the Louisiana Sportswriters Association's Outstanding Sports Story of the Year award in 1968, 1970 and 1973, and he received the Outstanding Sports Story award in the 1972 Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Managing Editors contest.

Other assignments included the first Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fight in 1971; the Sugar, Orange, Bluebonnet, Sun and Peach bowls; college and professional basketball; power-boat racing; swimming; and tennis.

In 1976 and 1977, Mr. Belloni was sports editor of The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss. He returned to Louisiana in 1977 to be public communications manager for Jefferson Parish President Douglas Allen. Mr. Belloni held that job until 1980, when he was named assistant director of the parish's Department of Community Development programs. He occupied that post until 1994.

Mr. Belloni did freelance work for Sports Illustrated, Southern Living, The Delta Review, Pro Basketball Digest, The Daily Record, The Jefferson Democrat, Mid-Gulf Sailing, Southwinds, United Press Agency and Reuters.

At his death, he was working on books on the Battle of New Orleans and 19th-century prizefighting in the New Orleans area, including the legendary 1892 bout in which "Gentleman Jim" Corbett defeated John L. Sullivan. Mr. Belloni also had written songs, poetry, an unpublished novel and several musical plays.
An avid racer of sports cars and sailboats, Mr. Belloni competed in the Sports Car Club of America's national championship in Atlanta in 1985, and he was a four-time winner of the Boat of the Year award from the Corinthian Sailing Association.

He also was an amateur woodworker and furniture builder, and he was a volunteer football and track coach at Lakeshore Playground in Metairie. Under his leadership, the girls' track team won the Jefferson Parish championship for 15- to 18-year-olds in 1980.

Mr. Belloni was a member of the local chapter of the Sports Car Club of America, the Corinthian Sailing Association and the Jefferson Parish Historical Society, and he was a board member of Jefferson Parish's 1984 World's Fair Commission.
He served in the Army in the early 1960s. When he was with the Army Security Agency at Fort Devens, Mass., he edited Regimental Gram, the command newspaper.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Tangman Belloni; two sons, Nathaniel F. Belloni III of Lafayette and Marc E. Belloni; a daughter, Gina Huth of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Robert J. Belloni of Mandeville and Kenneth J. Belloni of Plano, Texas; a sister, Ethel Tarleton of Austin, Texas; and six grandchildren.

A Mass will be said Thursday at noon at Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral Home, 1717 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will start at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, 3421 Esplanade Ave.

Nat Belloni, past CSA Commodore and avid sailor, died of cancer on Friday Feb 1, 2008. Nat was a great guy who could be counted on the get things done. He was a past CSA Commodore and at one time or another held every elected position on the CSA Board. He probably also chaired every CSA committee. He sailed his O'Day sailboat "Breezin" in most races around the Lake. Nat was a retired Times Picayune sports writer.

George Hero

Nat Belloni embodied the spirit of a group like the Corinthians. He competed in almost any racing or cruising event that came his way, kept the fun in racing as a top priority, and enjoyed the camaraderie which is part of our chosen sport. I have had the pleasure of racing and cruising with him over the last 15 years or so on the lake, the gulf and in the BVIs, and I know first hand for this to be true. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He will be missed both on and off the racecourse.
